Volume is the easy half. Length times width times depth is the same arithmetic for mulch, gravel and concrete, and it is exact. Weight is where estimates go wrong, because a cubic yard of material does not have a fixed weight. It has a bulk density, and bulk density moves with moisture, particle size, composition and how hard the pile has been packed.
That is why a calculator that reports a single tonnage to three decimal places is telling you something it cannot know. The figures below are practical estimating values, useful for deciding what to order and not for settling an invoice. Wet mulch can outweigh dry mulch substantially. Compacted aggregate base can run far heavier per yard than the same stone delivered loose.
Two habits make the difference. Order about ten percent more than the bare calculation, because material settles, spreads unevenly and gets lost in the corners of a bed. And when your supplier quotes their own delivered weight for the specific product, use their number instead of ours. They weighed it. We estimated it.
