How the Limestone Calculator works

The calculator finds volume first, then applies the selected material’s estimated bulk-density range to show weight. Your suggested order adds 10% for settling, uneven ground, and small measurement errors.

Using your measurements

12 ft × 8 ft × (4 in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 1.19 cu yd

The full breakdown

How much crushed limestone your driveway, paver base, or project actually needs

The limestone calculator above converts length, width, and depth into cubic yards, tons, and bags as you type. It covers the grades people actually order: crushed limestone for a long driveway, clean #57 for French drains and wall backfill, and dense-graded 411, 304, or 21AA for a paver or driveway base, with the tonnage a quarry needs to quote a delivery.

Limestone is the most widely quarried sedimentary rock in construction and civil engineering. When calculating crushed stone volume, geometry gives cubic feet and cubic yards (length × width × depth ÷ 27), but ordering aggregate from quarries and landscape supply yards requires converting to tons. Clean open-graded #57 limestone weighs roughly 2,400 to 2,700 lb per cubic yard (1.2 to 1.35 tons/yd³), while dense-graded aggregate with fines—such as crusher run, 411, 304, 2A, 610, and 21AA limestone—compacts into a dense, solid mass weighing 2,600 to 3,000 lb per cubic yard (1.3 to 1.5 tons/yd³).

Different project types demand specific limestone gradations. For a stable driveway or paver foundation, a heavy base course of #3 or #4 crushed rock followed by 4 to 6 inches of compacted 411, 304, or 21AA crusher run creates an interlocking foundation that resists vehicle tire ruts and frost heave. For water management around foundations, washed #57 stone or #8 limestone provides maximum void space for rapid drainage without clogging.

Limestone also has non-structural uses. Fine screenings and stone dust make a setting bed under flagstones and some pavers. Agricultural lime raises soil pH, but it is spread in tons per acre on a soil test’s recommendation, not by depth, so this calculator is not the tool for it. Liquid limestone is a poured decorative surface, closer to concrete than to aggregate; the concrete calculator sizes that pour.

Limestone gradation and fines change weight and compaction

A cubic yard always equals 27 cubic feet, but weight changes substantially with aggregate gradation. Open-graded #57 limestone contains air voids and drains freely, while dense-graded crusher run (#411 / 304 / 21AA) contains stone dust that packs tightly under compaction, resulting in higher tonnage per yard.

Recommended limestone depths by application & stone grade

Layer thickness depends on structural load, soil subgrade stability, and drainage requirements. Use these proven engineering depth guidelines for crushed limestone installations.

Bagged vs. bulk delivery & dump truck tonnage

Bagged crushed limestone (0.5 cu ft or 50 lb bags) is convenient for minor walkway repairs, fence post setting, and small masonry touch-ups. For driveways, patios, or foundation work requiring more than 1 cubic yard, purchasing bulk limestone by the ton from an aggregate quarry or local supply yard provides dramatic cost savings. A standard tri-axle dump truck typically hauls 14 to 16 tons (roughly 10 to 12 cubic yards) of crushed limestone per delivery.

A standard pallet holds roughly 40 to 56 bags of 50 lb limestone aggregate (approx. 1 to 1.4 tons).

Two common mistakes when ordering crushed limestone

Confusing open-graded #57 with dense-graded crusher run (#411)

Clean #57 limestone has all fines screened out to allow free drainage, making it ideal for French drains and leach fields, but it will not compact into a rigid slab. For driveways, shed pads, and paver bases that must stay flat and resist vehicle ruts, always use dense-graded limestone (#411, 304, 21AA, or crusher run) with stone fines that interlock solid under a plate compactor.

Applying agricultural lime without a verified soil test

Agricultural limestone (ag lime) is an alkaline soil amendment used to raise pH and neutralize acidity in soil, not a structural construction base. Spreading ag lime without a professional lab soil test and buffer pH analysis risks over-liming, which locks out essential plant nutrients like phosphorus, iron, and zinc.

Limestone questions people actually ask

Why add 10% to the calculated amount?

Extra material covers small dips, settling, spillage, and measurements that are not perfectly square. The calculated amount remains visible so you can compare both figures.

Are bag counts based on the same amount?

Both are shown. “Calculated” bags cover the measured volume; “Order” bags include the 10% allowance and round partial bags up to whole bags.

How accurate is the weight estimate?

Volume comes directly from your dimensions. Weight is a range because moisture, particle size, composition, and compaction change bulk density.

What is limestone?

Limestone is a common sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), chiefly in the form of the mineral calcite. It forms over millions of years from the accumulation of shell fragments, coral, algal debris, and chemical precipitation in shallow marine waters.

How to calculate limestone?

To calculate crushed limestone: measure your area length and width in feet, multiply them for square footage, multiply by depth in feet (depth in inches ÷ 12), and divide by 27 to find cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by 1.3 to 1.4 to determine total tons needed (e.g., #57 limestone runs ~2,600 lb/yd³; crusher run runs ~2,800 lb/yd³). Add 10% to 20% extra for compaction and subgrade settling.

How much crushed limestone do I need?

Multiply length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by 1.35 for estimated tons. For example, a 10×20 ft driveway section (200 sq ft) at a 4-inch depth requires 2.47 cubic yards, which equates to roughly 3.3 to 3.5 tons of crushed limestone base.

How much is limestone per sq ft?

Crushed limestone for a driveway or base costs roughly $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot at a 4 inch depth for the material alone, depending on the grade and the haul distance; delivery and spreading are extra.

How much is 1 ton of agricultural lime?

Bulk agricultural lime (ag lime) typically costs $25 to $50 per ton picked up from a quarry or agricultural cooperative, or $40 to $80 per ton delivered and custom-spread across fields. Bagged pelletized lime costs $4 to $8 per 40 lb bag ($200 to $400 per ton).

How much is limestone per square meter?

In metric terms, crushed limestone base at a 10 cm depth costs roughly $5 to $15 per square metre for bulk material, before delivery.

What type of rock is limestone?

Limestone is a biological and chemical sedimentary rock. It is formed from organic marine sediments (skeletal fragments of marine organisms) or from the direct chemical precipitation of calcium carbonate from marine and freshwater lakes.

How is limestone formed?

Limestone forms primarily in warm, shallow, calm marine environments where organisms like mollusks, corals, and foraminifera extract calcium carbonate from seawater to build shells and skeletons. When they die, their accumulated skeletal debris is compacted and cemented over geologic time through lithification.

What is limestone made of?

Limestone is made primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), mainly in the form of calcite and aragonite minerals. It may also contain minor amounts of clay, iron oxide, quartz, silica, feldspar, pyrite, and organic fossil fragments.

What is limestone used for?

Limestone is widely used as crushed stone aggregate for road building, driveway bases, concrete aggregate, asphalt mix, railroad ballast, Portland cement manufacturing, agricultural lime for soil pH remediation, flue-gas desulfurization in power plants, and dimension stone for architectural tiles, flooring, and building facades.

What color is limestone?

Pure limestone is white, off-white, or light cream. However, trace impurities give limestone a wide spectrum of colors: iron oxides produce yellow, tan, buff, and red shades; carbonaceous organic matter produces gray and deep charcoal/black; and clay minerals produce greenish-gray tones.

What is #57 limestone?

#57 limestone is crushed rock screened to uniform 1/2-inch to 1-inch pieces with no fine stone dust. It is open-graded and free-draining, making it the industry standard for French drains, septic lines, retaining wall backfill, and concrete aggregate.

What is 411 limestone (crusher run)?

411 limestone (also called crusher run or 3/4-inch minus) is a dense-graded blend of 3/4-inch crushed stone down to fine limestone dust. The fine particles fill all voids between stones, enabling it to compact into an extremely hard, stable base for driveways and pavers.

What is 304 limestone vs 2A / 2B limestone?

304 limestone (and 2A limestone) are dense-graded road base specifications containing 1.5-inch to 3/4-inch stones blended with fines for maximum compaction. 2B limestone is a clean, uniform aggregate (roughly 3/4-inch clean, equivalent to #57) without fines used for drainage and uncompacted top dressing.

What is 610 limestone and 21AA limestone?

610 limestone (common in the Southeast US) and 21AA limestone (standard DOT spec in Michigan and the Midwest) are dense-graded aggregate blends of 3/4-inch to 1.5-inch crushed limestone with fines, designed specifically for highway sub-bases, heavy parking lots, and long-lasting gravel driveways.

What is Type 1 limestone?

“Type 1” usually means MOT Type 1, the UK highways specification for a crushed sub-base: angular stone from about 1½ in (40 mm) down to dust, which compacts hard under a plate compactor. In the US the closest equivalents are crusher run, #411, 304, 2A, and 21AA. Pick the crusher run option in the calculator above for its weight range, and order the loose figure the compaction row shows.

What is liquid limestone?

Liquid limestone is a poured-in-place decorative paving mixture made from crushed limestone aggregate, white cement, and specialized polymers. It creates a seamless, durable, cooler-to-the-touch surface popular for swimming pool decks, patios, and outdoor pathways. The concrete calculator sizes a liquid limestone pour.
